4D Printing of Supramolecular Liquid Crystal Elastomer Actuators Fueled by Light

Abstract Recent years have seen major advances in the additive manufacturing of stimuli‐responsive materials, also known as “4D printing,” among which liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) play an important role. However, during fabrication photo‐crosslinking LCEs is required, but this step time‐consuming and efficient polymerization challenging, especially case light‐responsive materials. In work, first light‐fueled supramolecular suitable for direct ink writing (DIW) soft actuators are synthesized a photopolymerization not needed. With responsive material, 3D‐printed objects fabricated by exploiting thermoreversible interplay hydrogen‐bonding physical cross‐links. After printing, LCE shows reversible shape changes response to light capable bending lifting load. Through combined photothermal photochemical contributions incorporated azobenzene, can be triggered both air water. The freedom provided DIW allows printing complex objects, demonstrated fabricating re‐entrant honeycomb spiral director structures. This approach opens avenues toward application “smart” sustainable materials without requirement photo‐crosslinking.
